Guanaja Honduras, Wiener Schnitzel In Paradise!
Posted on May 2, 2008 - Filed Under Writing and Speaking
Why does anyone go to Guanaja? Where the heck is Guanaja?
Located in Central America off the north coast on Honduras, this barely developed Bay Island has a lot to offer. With its clear pristine Caribbean waters it is said to have world class bone fishing. If you are a deep sea angler, some of the best migratory fish pass through these waters, so deep that it boggles the mind. Lush green mountains that go back to the times when Christopher Columbus first set foot on the island in 1502 and named it the Isles of Pines this, along with an unlimited supply of pure fresh water cascading down from the mountain waterfalls, make it an island paradise to behold!
Guanaja is a stunning island. Up until now, it has been under the radar screen of most travelers and people looking for affordable retirement. It seems that it is just now starting to change a bit. Who would have thought that it is home to some of the best wiener schnitzel south of the German border?
A significant German population has found its way to this Central American hidey hole. There is even a restaurant and bar that serves the best of German food. Called the Manati, it is owned by a German fellow named Hansito and run by two other Germans, a married couple named Annetta and Klaus. Manati is the local hang out every Saturday afternoon with Honduran beer and imported German beers being sold side by side. Various schnapps from Europe, used as a digestive aid, are also available for after the heavier meals. Gringos from all over Guanaja come to see what Annetta and Klaus have whipped up in their tiny kitchen and no one leaves disappointed.
Annetta has a connection to a butcher that sends her meats and the special wursts, or sausages, that she needs from the mainland …. the mainland of Honduras that is! Who would think that you could get authentic German food in the wilds of the Bay Islands.
The Saturday afternoon that we visited, wiener schnitzel was on the menu. As we walked up the steps to the restaurant we could hear the pounding and whacking coming from the kitchen as Klaus tenderized the pork to the point where it could be cut with a fork. The schnitzel, dredged in flour and egg wash mixture, is fried up in butter and is truly mouth watering. Served with authentic German potato salad and sauerkraut made right on the premises, my Austrian husband was almost teary eyed with delight! I say “almost”, because who in their right mind would choose to be in Germany, freezing their hind ends off, when you could affordably live in the paradise of Guanaja?
Everybody has their own idea of paradise. Some people love the snow and mountains while others believe that the balmy breezes of a tropical island are the way to go. Some people say tomato, others TOMATO. Jimmy Buffet croons about a cheeseburger in paradise, but for my money, I will take a wiener schnitzel in paradise any day!
