My Review Of The Cold Steel Master Tanto Knife (#13bn)

Posted on May 3, 2008 - Filed Under Uncategorized

Why is the tanto style knife so popular? Beyond the fact that it looks like a Japanese sword, the tanto is wonderful because of its extreme strength and toughness.

The Cold Steel Master Tanto in San Mai steel is an exceptionally well-designed product that any knife owner can appreciate. With a suggested retail value of $299.99, it isn’t the cheapest cutting tool on the market. Here are my thoughts on the knife.

Dimensions:
Blade Length - 6 inches
Overall Length - 11.5 inches
Weight - 9.5 Ounces
Steel - VG-1 San Mai III
Thickness - 3/16″

What I like about the Master Tanto:

1. Unlike clip points, spear points or even drop point knives the Master Tanto blade stays thick and strong near the tip. Even after repeated hard use, you will have a very difficult time breaking or damaging the tip.

2. San Mai steel means that three layers of steel are folded together to give you the ultimate compromise between edge retention and flexibility. The inner core is made from super tough VG-1 stainless. The outer layers are made from 400 series stainless, which is more flexible and makes the blade much less brittle.

The blade is not likely to rust on you because it is all stainless steel.

3. The Cold Steel Master Tanto is made with a full tang, which means that the blade steel goes all the way to the end of the handle. This adds to the knife’s rock solid construction and helps to distribute the weight evenly.

4. Cold Steel’s checkered Kraton grip feels great in your hand. It will also hold up even in the most treacherous weather conditions.

What I didn’t like:

There isn’t a whole lot that I dislike about the Master Tanto. It might be one of the best values on the knife market today.

Overall:

Go get a Cold Steel Master Tanto. I’m confident that it will quickly become your favorite knife.

http://www.KnifeSell.com has Master Tantos starting at $152.

All the best,
