Bank interest rates being favorable today makes expansion very tempting. How often have you seen your favorite eating establishment open a second location only to see both locations go out of business? The second location being successful will depend on either spreading the current management and owners thinner or hiring employees that may or may not have the same expertise to run the business. Oh, they maybe able to run it “in the ground.”

If you can restructure debt at lower rates, great! I am addressing taking on more debt in uncertain retail times.

Case Study - Teasing Your Customers

Every December for six years the Marketing Manager for a Midwest company held a presentation in Florida at a famous resort. Current and potential customers from across the country flew to the resort for three days of educational seminars, usually staying over a few more days for personal time at the theme park.

The presentations were educational in nature and were not meant to be blatant company promotions. The seminar group gave each presenter the following:

1. A 45 minute block of time to present their pre-approved educational material.

2. Four hours of time in a booth following their presentation to answer questions.

He Said - She Said

“Said” is a good, solid word. Don’t look down on it.

Some writers - particularly the inexperienced ones trying to sound sophisticated - hamstring their work with a long and weary list of substitutes for “said.” Those substitutes can bog your writing down and distract the reader’s attention from the dialog itself. Here’s an example:

“It’s time to go,” he exclaimed.

“Are you sure?” she uttered.

“Yes, I’m sure,” he averred.

“But I’m not ready,” she asserted.

“We don’t have a choice,” he ejaculated.

“Yes we do. We can stay here and die,” she acknowledged.
