Imagine scuba diving and visions of James Bond sporting fins and stealthily approaching the scoundrel come to mind. Or, perhaps your primary notion is of Jacques Cousteau exploring the inhabitants of a coral reef. Either picture has entered popular culture for good cause - they mirror the journey and marvel that distinguish scuba diving.

While numerous people look upon Jules Verne’s account of undersea diving as complete science fiction, apparatus-assisted diving had been reality for about 100 years previously. However it wasn’t until the WWII period that Emile Gagnan, with a little assistance from a then little known French navel lieutenant - Jacques Cousteau – conjured up the first scuba equipment, the Aqualung.
