The History Of Cell Phone Directories
Posted on May 6, 2008 - Filed Under Communications
A public phone directory can be very beneficial if you need to find someone’s phone number, or would like to know who the owner is of an unknown phone number. However, although phone directories can be very beneficial when it comes to finding residential and business wire line numbers, the same cannot be said for cell phone numbers, because public cell phone directories do not exist.
The reason why there is no major wireless phone directory isn’t because no one has ever thought about it, or attempted to establish one. In fact, cell phone directories have quite a history and the creation of a directory has been considered for years. However, there are many issues that prevent the creation of a public directory, some of which include:
- Risk of costly fees - Due to the fact that cell phone subscribers are charged for both incoming and outgoing calls, cell numbers are considered private and are unlisted.
- Frequent number changes - Millions of people own cell phones, and many of them frequently change phone numbers either because they move or switch service providers. Consistent phone number changes may cause a lot of problems such as a cell phone subscriber receiving wrong number calls.
- Increase in telemarketing calls - Many mobile phone users fear that if their number could be accessed via a public directory, this would provide telemarketers the opportunity to call them.
What you need to know about the current status of a public cell phone directory is that most of the major cell phone companies wanted to create a Wireless 411 service to accommodate the number of cell phone users. However, this plan has been put on long-term hold, so as of now there are no talks of creating a mobile phone directory. That being said, if the Wireless 411 was created, it was going to be a free opt-in service, allowing cell phone consumers to choose whether or not they wanted their phone number added to the directory, and also providing them the freedom to remove their number from the directory whenever they wished. Furthermore, the phone numbers within the directory would not have been released to telemarketers, as it would still be illegal for telemarketing companies to call cell phone consumers.
Thus, if you would like to trace information associated with a cell phone number, you will need to rely on reverse cell phone lookup websites to find out more about a phone number you are looking for, which in some cases may mean paying a small fee for a more detailed search.
