Internet Marketing Tips - Dont Treat Your Customers Like Trash

Posted on May 6, 2008 - Filed Under Business

Want to kill your business quick? Treat your customers like trash and you’ll be looking for employment in the real world. This article is actually coming from a very bad customer service incident that has seriously got me considering taking my business elsewhere. I am going to share this little story with you in the hopes that you won’t make the same bone headed mistake that this person made.

I belong to many sites and some of them require I pay via credit card. Well, what I usually do is go into the members area from time to time to see when my card is expiring. See, I have more than one credit card that I use so it’s not cut and dried as to when my membership will expire. One day, I will migrate all my memberships to one card, but that’s another story.

Anyway, I went to the online support forum to find out how to update my card info. See, for whatever reason, you can’t see your card info at this site. You have to pretty much keep track of when your card is going to expire on your own. That alone is just a poor way of running a site. Anyway, the smart answer that I got from one of the support staff was ” I do it by taking a look at my card to see when it’s going to expire”. Not helpful at all. Well, I have since wrote to the CEO of the company to complain about this flip answer.

Let me ask you a question. If you have a customer and you value that customer, don’t you at least give them the courtesy of an answer that explains why your system works as it does? Maybe they might not like the system, but at least they won’t be able to complain that they didn’t get a thorough answer to their question. It doesn’t take much effort to be courteous to people.

Now, I am seriously thinking of taking my business elsewhere. Now, maybe my one less membership isn’t going to affect them much. But what if they treated everybody like this? Do you think they’d have much of a membership after a while? I don’t think so. And yes, companies DO go out of business because of poor customer support.

So, if you want to stay in business and have happy customers, don’t treat them like trash.

To YOUR Success,

Steven Wagenheim
