Security Concerns In Bus Accidents

Posted on July 2, 2008 - Filed Under Automotive

When thinking about something like a bus accident, security is probably one of the last things that comes to mind. And why shouldn’t it be? Crashes are caused by driver error, or mechanical failure, or perhaps even alcohol impairment - not by a lack of security, right?

If you believe that statement, you’d be wrong. While driver error and mechanical failure and alcohol impairment all can and do factor into bus crashes, problems in security may also play a large role. A discussion about promoting bus safety which fails to mention security is, quite simply, incomplete.

Driver-Passenger Interaction

On a bus, as in a car, drivers and passengers interact in various ways. Ideally, a driver would concentrate solely on driving, and passengers would be deferential, respectful, and non-disruptive. Unfortunately, this is rarely - if ever - the case.

Studies have shown that a driver who is talking on a cell phone or engaged in conversation with one of more of the car’s occupants displays a significantly slowed reaction time, similar to that of alcohol-impaired drivers. On a bus, the situation only gets worse. A large number of passengers increases the amount of distractions that a bus driver must deal with; monitoring a vehicle full of passengers takes valuable attention away from the task of driving safely.

Many bus crashes have also been caused by passengers who directly interfere with a driver’s job. Disruptive passengers have been known to argue with, physically assault, or attempt to wrest control of the vehicle from bus drivers. Though such actions are understandably illegal, the lack of security on many buses means that the laws in question are only enforceable after the fact.

Accident Injury Fraud

Security is also an important concern even after a bus crash has occurred. In many cities, unscrupulous characters have been known to board buses that have already crashed and fake injuries in order to fraudulently claim compensation. These illegal actions not only hurt bus companies, but also make it more difficult for legitimate victims to get the compensation they do deserve. The implementation of improved security devices or measures could help reduce the impact of such injury fraud.
