Nokia also began offering a beta version of Nokia Maps 2.0, its mobile mapping software, through the Nokia Beta Labs Web site. Nokia last year has promised to concentrate more on the location-based services as well as to launch many more devices with the capability of GPS this year. The world’s leading phone maker has delivered its promise with the launch of its new 6210 Navigator along with the concurrent version of the mapping software.
Nokia began providing the beta version of its mobile mapping software, Nokia Maps 2.0, through the Web site. The new version arrives with satellite views, multimedia city guides, pedestrian navigation, and an enhanced user interface. The component for pedestrian navigation is named as Walk, giving the travelers visual directions turn-by-turn, location information, and the descriptions of the surroundings like parks, streets and buildings. The software can also be used along with the compass integrated in the mobile phone — to welcome the newer Nokia models - which shows its users the direction in which they are walking.
Nokia is already offering a car-based component for navigation as part of the Nokia Maps, referred as Drive. The Nokia Maps 2.0 needs a phone with the capability of GPS, or some external module for GPS connected to the mobile device, so as to provide voice and visual directions turn-by-turn. The company even said that it will introduce the Nokia Maps in a mass market version in the 1st half of present year for the mobile devices that are based on Series 40 platform.
Since owning the digital map maker Navteq for 8.1 billion dollars, Nokia has become busy in developing new softwares and devices to compete with the leading GPS system makers such as Garmin, which recently has launched its own personal hybrid navigator-phone. Competing with that, Nokia has introduced its first mobile phone that is GPS-enabled with Nokia Maps 2.0 and an integrated compass. The phone also comes along with a car kit for the car navigation, an assisted GPS in order to access the satellite views, and the local maps pre-installed on the 1GB memory card of the device.
“By combining its integrated compass of Nokia 6210, with the accuracy and speed of the assisted GPS, the Nokia Maps 2.0 offers a unique experience which other mobile navigation applications cannot,” said Halbherr, Vice President of location based service group of Nokia in a statement. The other features of the 6210 Navigator include a 3G support for the high-speed browsing of Internet, 3.2-megapixel camera, FM radio and MP3 player. The 6210 Navigator is S60 platform based, which means that the users can take advantage of the thousands of applications present out there, according to Nokia.
The Nokia might start shipping these 6210 Navigators in 3rd quarter of 2008 in the selected markets with a reasonable price of about 435 dollars.
