By itself the
term Medical Sales isn’t all that informative. Despite the fact that one
can see Medical Sales jobs advertised in the media, there are several
different kinds of job that all come under that same title. The list that
follows covers the main sub-divisions.

Primary Care rep’s

Also sometimes
referred to as GP rep’s these are Medical
Sales jobs that are concerned with promoting products within the primary
care sector (GP practices). In an industry that is, in general, very well paid
and difficult to enter, this kind of job is perhaps the easiest access route.

Research it
well beforehand if you are looking to enter the Medical Sales industry via this route. If you could persuade an
existing GP rep’ to allow you to “shadow” her/him for a day this
would give you an ideal introduction.

But how does
one find a suitably co-operative GP rep? No problem … visit a local GP
surgery and see if you can talk them into giving you some business cards for
local reps. After all, visiting surgeries in this way is what you would be
doing all the time in Medical Sales
jobs.

By the way,
rep’s need to pass the ABPI exam within your first two years in a Medical Sales job. You could think of
this as being equivalent to GCE “A” level Biology.

GP/Hospital rep’s

These are , and requiring the ability to negotiate supply contracts with the
buyers.

Further Research

Other less
prominent areas that the prospective Medical
Sales person might profitably research include “Veterinary
sales” and “Dental sales”.
